Breed history: Droughtmaster is an Australian breed of beef cattle developed to thrive in harsh conditions. This breed combines the endurance of zebu-like cattle with the meat qualities of British breeds. In the late 19th century, a true invasion of ticks began in Northern Queensland (Australia), which proved dangerous for European breeds of cattle. Breeding these breeds became nearly impossible. In 1896, ticks first appeared in Northern Queensland, and it quickly became clear that this was a serious problem for local cattle breeders. European breed cows could not withstand these parasites. In 1910, an attempt was made to find a solution. Three zebu bulls from the Melbourne Zoo were brought to Northern Queensland. As is known, zebu is a breed of cattle originating from India, recognized for its heat and insect resistance. Indeed, zebu demonstrated impressive endurance in the new conditions. In 1926, an event occurred that inspired breeders to create a new breed. Accidental (i.e., not intended for specific breeding work) offspring of zebu and British cattle showed high adaptability to drought and resistance to ticks. With such a sensation, active work on the new breed began in the 1930s. Brahman cattle, also known for their heat and insect resistance, were imported into the region. Brahmans were crossed with Shorthorn, Shorthorn-Devon, and Hereford breeds. R. L. Atkinson played a key role in the development of the breed. In 1956, breeders decided to focus solely on red cattle. The name "Droughtmaster," proposed by Atkinson, was adopted. A breed society was established, and a herd book was initiated. Thus, the Droughtmaster breed of cattle emerged—a unique combination of endurance, adaptability, and meat quality. It became a true salvation for cattle breeders in Northern Queensland and continues to be bred in Australia and other countries with hot climates. Exterior: Bulls can weigh up to 1000 kg, and in some cases even more. The average weight of bulls is about 930 kg. Cows usually weigh less—up to 550 kg, although larger individuals weighing up to 695 kg can also be found. The color of Droughtmasters is reddish-brown or red. Shades can vary from golden-honey to dark red. This coloration helps them better endure the hot sun and avoid overheating. Droughtmasters have short, smooth hair. It provides good protection against insects and helps maintain a comfortable body temperature.

Diet: It is known that Drôtmaster cows show excellent results on feedlots and high-quality pastures. This indicates that they are capable of effectively utilizing a variety of feed resources. Drôtmasters have high digestive efficiency. They can extract maximum nutrients even from low-quality feed. This allows them to grow and reproduce even with a deficiency of nutrients in the diet. Drôtmasters develop even with a lack of nutritious grass due to their slow metabolism, which enables them to efficiently expend energy and manage with less food. Drôtmasters are excellent "foragers." They are capable of finding feed even in places where other breeds might starve. Additionally, the cows have lower nutritional requirements compared to cows of other breeds.
