Breed History: The origin of Lowline cattle is closely linked to the Trangie Agricultural Research Centre in New South Wales, Australia. In 1929, the Australian government acquired a herd of Aberdeen-Angus from Canada, supplemented with animals from the USA and Scotland, to create a breeding herd. The goal was to provide the livestock industry in New South Wales with quality stock. From 1929 to 1963, this herd participated in Australian exhibitions and received numerous awards. In 1964, the breeding book was closed to outside genetics. A key phase began in 1974 when research on feed conversion efficiency in animals of different sizes started at Trangie. The herd was divided into three groups: "High line" (tall), "Low line" (short), and a control "Control line." The research, which continued until 1992, showed that Lowline cows demonstrate extremely high feed conversion efficiency into meat while maintaining other productive characteristics. The height at the withers of adult bulls was 109–110 cm, cows were 99 cm and under, while the standard height at the withers for Aberdeen-Angus reaches 150 cm. At the end of the research in 1992, interested breeders purchased Lowline cattle at a sale and established the Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA). In 1994, Lowlines made their debut at the Royal National Show in Brisbane and subsequently at other major agricultural exhibitions in Australia. The breed quickly spread in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Canada (the Canadian association was established in 1997). It is important to note that the breed was developed naturally, without the use of the dwarfism gene. Exterior: Lowline is a small (but by no means dwarf) sized cow. Its dimensions are approximately 60% of a typical beef breed cow. The approximate weight of adult Lowline cows at maturity (around three years) is 320 kg, while bulls reach a weight of 400 kg, sometimes up to 600 kg, which, given their small size, makes them particularly powerful and productive. At birth, calves weigh on average from 18 to 22 kg and quickly gain weight: by eight months, heifer weights are around 110 kg, and bull weights are 140 kg. By one year, heifers reach 190 kg, and bulls reach 230 kg, indicating their good growth rates and developed meat productivity. Lowlines are primarily black in color, but red individuals and those with white markings, usually located in the area of the scrotum or udder, are also found in the breed.
