History of the breed. Lasater Ranch in Texas (USA) became the place for breeding Beefmaster cattle. The breeding program was initiated by Ed K. Lasater in 1908 when he acquired Brahman bulls for use in his Hereford and Shorthorn herd. The first bulls were predominantly of the Gir breed, and in 1925, Guzerat blood was added to the herd. Lasater developed a herd of Herefords with red circles around their eyes, focusing on dairy cattle. After his death in 1930, his son Tom Lasater took over the breeding work, crossing Brahmans, Herefords, and Shorthorns to create the "Beefmaster."
