Breed history: The British White cow is a breed of beef cattle known for its endurance, calm temperament, and high-quality beef. The origins of the cow trace back to the deep past of Great Britain. This breed is closely related to the wild white cattle that inhabited the Wally Abbey in Lancashire. In 1765, part of this wild cattle was transported to Norfolk. There, two main herds were formed: one near Aylsham (which, unfortunately, suffered from plague in 1860) and the other in Woodbastwick. The herd from Somerford also played an important role in the breed's development. This herd included both polled (hornless) and horned individuals. From 1875 to 1918, there was an exchange of bulls between the herds of Somerford, Woodbastwick, and Norfolk. This was done to prevent inbreeding—crossbreeding of closely related individuals. As a result, two types of English Park breed were formed: polled and horned. In 1918, the "Park English Cattle Breeders' Society" was established, aimed at recording and developing the breed. In 1946, the society split into two branches—one for horned and one for polled representatives. The polled branch became known as the British White. In 1990, 116 herds with more than 1500 registered individuals of the British White breed were recorded. This indicates the growing popularity of the breed. Today, the British White is a successful beef breed valued for its hardiness, endurance, and high meat quality. Exterior: The British White is a breed characterized by impressive size and harmonious build. British White cows reach a weight of 650 kg, while bulls can weigh a whole ton. In America, these figures can be even higher: cows weigh between 450 and 680 kg, and bulls range from 815 to 1135 kg. The height of British White cows is also impressive. The shoulder height of cows is 135 cm, while bulls stand at 145 cm. This is above average for beef breeds. The coloration of the British White is one of the most memorable. The primary color is white, but they have black or red markings on the ears, nose, eyelids, teats, hooves, and tongue. The skin usually has dark pigmentation. Such a contrasting coloration makes them easily recognizable in pastures. The head of the British White is elongated and wide. Cows have a more elegant head, while bulls have a coarser one. This breed is polled, meaning it has no horns.
