Luing cow — beli atau jual
Breed history: The origin of the Luing cow is linked to the island of the same name, located off the west coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides. In 1947, the Kazov brothers – Ralph, Denis, and Shane – laid the foundation for this breed, setting an ambitious goal: to create a hardy breed of cattle capable of successfully reproducing and gaining weight in the harsh conditions of the west coast of Scotland while producing quality meat. To achieve this, they used two completely different but perfectly complementary breeds: Shorthorn cattle (for its meat qualities) and Scottish Highland cattle (for its hardiness and adaptation to harsh climates). Initially, a Shorthorn bull was crossed with a Scottish Highland cow. The resulting offspring were then crossed again with Shorthorn bulls to produce an animal that was three-quarters Shorthorn and one-quarter Highland blood. This meticulous selection process took years. In 1965, the British government officially recognized Luing as a distinct breed. The Kazov brothers continued to improve the breed, and today Shane Kazov – the third generation of the family – continues to breed cows on the island of Luing and surrounding areas. The breed has spread beyond Scotland, gaining popularity in the UK, Ireland, Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and South America. Exterior: This breed of cow is medium-sized, with a strong build and robust constitution. Luings, bred specifically for harsh climatic conditions, appear very resilient, adapted to cold and windy environments, as evidenced by their strong skeleton and solid physique. A distinctive feature of the breed is the absence of horns (polled), which gives the animals a compact and neat appearance. Bulls are, of course, noticeably larger and bulkier than cows and have a more muscular build, which is why they are more often used for meat. Adult Luing cows typically weigh around 500 kg, while bulls can grow up to 950 kg, reflecting the impressive potential of this breed for meat production. The height at the withers for cows is about 130 cm, while bulls can reach 140 cm. This proportion makes the animals not only visually compact but also physiologically balanced for movement across rough terrain.

Diet: The nutrition of Luing cows is primarily based on pasture lands. This breed can graze effectively on pastures with relatively low fertility levels. However, to maintain optimal health and growth of the animals, especially during cold weather or when access to pastures is limited, the diet must be supplemented with hay, silage, and other types of feed that provide higher energy value. These additional feeds support the animals' resistance to cold and supply their bodies with everything necessary to maintain weight and health. During pregnancy and lactation, the dietary requirements become even higher. Expecting and nursing mothers require a nutrient-rich diet that includes proteins, minerals, and vitamins to support both the mother and the growing offspring. For such animals, it is important to introduce high-energy and easily digestible supplements, including concentrates and root crops, which increase the overall nutritional value and contribute to the normal course of pregnancy and proper feeding of the calf. The nutrition of calves in the first months of life is based on maternal milk, which provides them with everything necessary for active growth and immune protection. As they grow, to ensure that calves receive all the necessary nutrients for accelerated growth and strengthening of bones and muscles, concentrated feeds, hay, and grain mixtures are gradually introduced into their diet. This gradual transition helps the young stock adapt to the nutrition of adult cows and effectively utilize the farm's feed base in the future.
