Dutch cow (Extinct)
History of the breed: The Dutch cow (more precisely, the Dutch black-and-white) was the ancestor of the modern Holstein breed and played a key role in the development of dairy farming worldwide. It is important to distinguish between the historical Dutch breed and the modern Holstein, which inherited many of its traits. The Dutch black-and-white cow is the result of centuries of selection that began as early as the 14th century in the Netherlands. This country, with its mild climate, abundant rainfall, and extensive pastures, became an ideal place for the development of dairy farming. The high demand for butter and cheese stimulated breeders to produce cows with high milk productivity. In the 17th-18th centuries, Dutch cattle began their journey around the world. They were exported to various countries, including Russia. Initially, Dutch cows did not show high results in Russia due to difficulties in adapting to the new climate. However, crossbreeding with local breeds led to the emergence of improved breeds, such as the Holmogory, Tagil, and Bestuzhev. In the 19th century, Dutch cattle became the basis for the development of many modern breeds, including Holstein. The export of Dutch cows continued to the USA, Canada, Japan, and other countries. In the 20th century, the Holstein breed, developed from the Dutch, gradually displaced its predecessor. This was due to Holstein cows having higher milk productivity. Today, it is very difficult to find the Dutch cow in purebred form, and according to some data, it is even considered extinct. Exterior: The color of Dutch cows is black-and-white. The black-and-white spots create a contrasting pattern that makes these cows easily recognizable. The build of Dutch cows is characterized by long limbs, a fragile skeleton, and poorly developed musculature. This is because their main energy is directed towards milk production rather than muscle mass gain. At the same time, the body is proportionally developed, the back is straight, and the chest is deep and wide. The weight of adult cows was 550-560 kg. This is the average weight for dairy breeds. Bulls were significantly larger and could weigh up to 1000 kg. The height at the withers of cows is about 132.5 cm. Conditions of keeping: The Dutch cow is a breed that has been formed over centuries in the moderate climate of the Netherlands. It is well adapted to local conditions but is quite demanding regarding the quality of housing and nutrition.

Diet: Most Dutch cows spend a significant amount of time grazing and primarily feed on grass. However, grass does not grow well in winter. To continue feeding their cows in winter, dairy farmers process some of the summer grass into silage. Silage is a preserved form of grass. To monitor the quality of silage, samples are taken to check for harmful microorganisms, such as fungi and butyric acid bacteria, which can cause problems at later stages of cheese and other dairy product production. A cow consumes about 55 kg of grass per day. Awareness of silage quality helps the dairy farmer adjust the cows' diets to optimize milk production. The right balance contributes to good digestion, milk production, milk quality, as well as the health and welfare of the cow. The diet of a Dutch cow mainly consists of grass and silage, which are high in protein. To optimize the cow's diet, dairy farmers supplement it with corn and concentrate produced by animal feed manufacturers. They mix ingredients such as meal, grains, minerals, and vitamins, and then press this mixture into small pellets. The concentrate must meet very high quality standards to prevent undesirable substances from entering the feed, which could later lead to milk quality issues. The norm for a Dutch cow is 5 kg of concentrates per day. Additionally, a cow should drink 100 liters of water per day.
