Devon
Breed history: Devon is an ancient English breed of cattle that originated in the picturesque county of Devon in southwest England. The origins of this breed are lost in the depths of centuries, and scholars still debate how exactly it was formed. Some researchers believe that the Devon breed emerged as a result of the mixing of local breeds with animals that were brought to the British Isles as far back as the Bronze Age. The first mentions of Devon cattle date back to the 18th century. Since then, this breed has become very popular, but it has not gained recognition in Kyrgyzstan. For many decades, the Devon breed was one of the most widespread in England. However, in the mid-20th century, interest in it gradually waned due to the emergence of new, more productive breeds. Fortunately, in recent years, the situation has begun to change. Thanks to the growing demand for natural products and organic meat, the Devon breed is experiencing a revival. Today, these cows are increasingly being raised on farms around the world. There are types of Devon cattle: North Devon and South Devon. Exterior: Devon is a stately breed of beef cattle with a harmonious build and well-developed musculature. The color of the cows is a deep, rich red, ranging from dark burgundy to light chestnut shades. Notably, bulls are usually somewhat darker than cows, and a red-ruby color is especially valued in them. The head of Devon cows is medium-sized and proportional to the body. Bulls have a slightly wider head with a pronounced crest on the neck. The animals have large, well-set ears. In the past, all Devon cows were horned, but selective breeding has led to the emergence of polled individuals. If Devon cattle have horns, they are usually cream-white and elegantly curved downwards. The build of Devon cattle is strong, with a wide and deep chest. The back is long, the loin is full, and the hindquarters should not be sloped. The animals have strong, correctly positioned legs. The udder of the cows is neat, with well-placed medium-sized teats. Devon bulls reach an average height of 136 centimeters at the withers and weigh between 770-1000 kilograms. Cows are somewhat smaller: their height at the withers is about 130 centimeters, and their weight is 430-590 kilograms. Housing conditions: Devons are characterized by good adaptability to various climatic conditions.

Diet: The Devon cow is distinguished by its hardiness in feeding. These animals adapt well to various feeding conditions and are capable of efficiently utilizing pasture feeds. Due to their natural endurance, Devon cows can graze on different types of pastures, obtaining all the necessary nutrients from the grass. In the winter period, when fresh grass is not so easy to find, the diet of Devon cows includes hay and silage. Hay provides the animals with fiber and other important nutrients, while silage serves as a source of moisture and additional nutrients. This diet structure allows for the maintenance of animal health and productivity even in cold weather.
