Breed history: Asturiana de los Valles (Asturian Valley) is a breed of cattle that serves as a living testament to the history of livestock farming in Spain. This local beef breed originates from the northern part of the country, from the picturesque region of Asturias. Its history is closely intertwined with the development of agriculture in this region. The roots of the Asturiana de los Valles trace back to a distant past, to the Cantabrian genetic stock that unites many breeds of northern Spain. In the 19th century, it was the most numerous breed in this part of the country, indicating its high adaptation to local conditions and value for livestock farmers. In the 20th century, the situation changed. The introduction of more specialized European breeds led to a sharp decline in the population of Asturiana de los Valles. By the beginning of the century, its population had dwindled to just 22,000 heads. This raised concerns for the preservation of the breed. In the 1980s, the Spanish Association of Breeders of Select Cattle of the Asturiana de los Valles breed (ASEAVA) and the Spanish government began taking measures to protect the breed. Programs for the restoration and improvement of the breed were launched, and a Breeders' Association was established. Thanks to these efforts, the 1990s saw a significant recovery in the population of the Asturian Valley cow. The breed began to spread to other regions of Spain. This was an important step in preserving the genetic diversity and cultural heritage of the country. Exterior: The Asturian Valley cow is a breed that stands out for its harmonious build and pleasant appearance. Representatives of this breed are far from giants among cows; they are medium-sized and look compact and proportional. The coat color of the Asturiana de los Valles cow is a whole palette of shades, from dark brown to light golden-brown. Individuals with a white head are found, while the area around the eyes remains colored. Sometimes white markings can be seen on the lower part of the belly. This diversity in color makes each individual unique. To be more specific, the coat of the Asturiana de los Valles is chestnut with various shades. In cows, the shade can be very pale, almost yellow, while in bulls it is more saturated, reddish. On the inner side of the legs and around the muzzle, the coat may have a creamy shade, while at the ends of the legs and their front part it is black. Bulls generally have darker coats, especially in the areas of the nape, neck, brisket, lower belly, and legs, where it can be completely black.

Diet: The Asturian Valley cow is a breed that is well adapted to the use of various feed resources. The basis of the Asturian's diet is grass. In spring, summer, and autumn, it happily grazes in pastures, eating fresh greenery. In winter, when access to pastures is limited, the Asturian feeds on hay and silage—grass harvested for the summer. On fattening farms, the diet can be more diverse. It includes corn, soy, hay, and other components that ensure rapid growth and weight gain.
