Breed History: The Hay Converter is a beef breed of cattle developed in Canada, in the province of Alberta, based on in-depth and scientifically grounded research and breeding work. The breed was created by Harry Hayes, a renowned Canadian livestock breeder and politician who dedicated his life to improving cattle productivity. As a result of his work, the breed was named in his honor — "Hays Converter" (the wordplay is lost in translation). The process of developing the Hay Converter began in the 1950s when Hayes set out to create a sustainable, productive breed adapted to the Canadian climate, characterized by high weight gain and excellent meat qualities. Breeding work was conducted at a time when the import of European cattle into Canada was impossible due to strict restrictions imposed over concerns about the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Consequently, Hayes was forced to limit himself to using breeds available in North America. For crossbreeding, he selected three breeds: Holstein, Hereford, and Swiss, as each possessed important qualities for the future breed. For example, the Holstein breed was known for its high productivity and adaptability to local conditions, the Hereford for its stable weight gain and disease resistance, and the Swiss for its excellent meat quality and flavor. The crossbreeding took place in 1954, using Holstein and Hereford breeds. One of the key selection methods was evaluating the weight of bulls at one year of age — Hayes allowed only those weighing at least 500 kg to continue breeding. For cows, the main criteria were high fertility, regular calving, good weight, and the ability to calve easily in pasture conditions. In 1959, after several generations of crossbreeding and animal selection, he added a third breed — Swiss — to the genetics, which provided the necessary musculature and resilience. From that point on, breeding was conducted only within a closed group of animals. After 7 years of intensive work, in 1975, the Hay Converter became the first officially registered Canadian beef breed of cattle. Exterior: Hay Converters are large, powerful animals with a solid, well-developed physique. They are polled (hornless), which significantly simplifies their maintenance and makes the breed safer to work with, especially in intensive farming conditions.

Diet: To ensure high productivity of hay converters, it is important to pay attention to the diet. The basis of their nutrition consists of pasture feeds, which allow animals to gain weight naturally. In the cold season, it is recommended to additionally include concentrated feeds and vitamin supplements in the diet, especially during the pregnancy period of cows, when the need for energy and nutrients increases.
