Random hybrids of bison were recorded in 1749 in North America. Charles Goodnight was the first to specifically breed Bifalo on his ranch. Bifalo is a multi-breed complex hybrid of cattle and American wild bison, created as a result of efforts to obtain an animal that can thrive without covered facilities, feed solely on plant feed, and forage independently, even in winter. The American bison was used as the base, which was crossed with cows of different breeds; in addition, it was necessary to achieve a high average daily gain of 800-1300 g. The resulting hybrid Bifalo fully meets the set goals. Charles Goodnight managed to produce the first artificially bred Bifalo, but it later turned out that first-generation hybrid bulls were sterile. In contrast, females were able to produce offspring, necessitating the use of non-hybrid bulls for further breeding, which led to the near extinction of pure bison. In 1965, Jim Barnott, living in Montana, managed to obtain a hybrid bull that continued the lineage. Bifalo has a strong build, a calm temperament, high activity, resistance to various diseases, a fertility rate of about 99%, endurance to cold and high temperatures, and a lifespan of about 20 years. Bifalo is raised in 50 states of the USA, and Bifalo has also been exported to many countries. Exterior. Bifalo has a brown coat, but the color can vary from dark black to light brown, with long and thick fur, thick skin, and well-developed sebaceous and sweat glands, allowing Bifalo to winter even outdoors. The body is large, muscles are well-defined, the head is large, eyes are small, ears are erect, and the tail has a long tuft. The height at the withers for bulls is 135-140 cm, and for cows, it is 132-138 cm; the weight of bulls is 800-1150 kg, while females weigh 650 kg. Conditions of keeping. Bifalo tolerates high and low temperatures well; they feel comfortable even in winter outdoors, thanks to their structural features. Bifalo is undemanding in terms of feed, excellently digests fiber, and has high productivity, with a fertility rate of 95-99%, which is 15% higher than that of British meat breeds. Bifalo can do without covered facilities, feed solely on plant feed, and forage even in winter under the snow.
