Breed history: The Volyn cow is a meat breed officially registered in 1994 and quickly gained leading positions in Ukraine in terms of population. The breeding of the Volyn breed began in the western region of Ukraine. This process was long and multi-stage. Initially, breeders selected four main breeds: black-spotted and red Polish as maternal lines, as well as Aberdeen-Angus, Hereford, and Limousin as paternal lines. Local cattle were added to ensure that the new breed was maximally adapted to the conditions of the region. As a result, the breed has the following blood composition: 3/8 Limousin, 3/16 Aberdeen-Angus, 3/16 Hereford, and 1/4 local cattle. This combination allowed for an optimal balance of meat qualities and adaptability. After crossing, a long process of purebred breeding "within itself" began. This process took more than 20 years of meticulous work by breeders. Only in 1994 was the Volyn meat breed officially registered. This marked an important milestone in its history, confirming the success of breeding work and the achievement of desired characteristics. Exterior: Volyn cows are distinguished by their large size. Their height at the withers usually does not exceed 130 cm, making them slightly shorter than some other meat breeds. However, their weight is impressive: bulls reach 1050 kg, and cows weigh 550 kg. This indicates good musculature and a massive skeleton. The coat color of Volyn cows is red. Individuals with fiery red fur, as well as those with dark red, almost brown, can be found. This gives them a bright and memorable appearance. The head of Volyn cows is relatively small, even somewhat disproportionate in relation to their massive body. The forehead is wide, which gives them an imposing look. Cows are usually polled. This trait was inherited from some of the original breeds and reinforced during the selection process. The neck of Volyn cows is short and powerful, smoothly transitioning into a wide chest. The body is large, with a strong skeleton, but somewhat shorter than that of other meat breeds. This gives them a compact and muscular appearance. The limbs are short, stable, and strong, allowing them to move easily and graze in pastures. The hindquarters are wide and rounded. The udder of the cows is small, with the quarters developed disproportionately. This is due to the fact that the Volyn breed is meat-oriented, and milk productivity is not a priority.

Diet: In summer, Volyn cows primarily feed on pasture grasses. They enjoy eating a variety of plants, obtaining all the necessary vitamins and minerals. In winter, when pastures are covered with snow, the diet of Volyn cows changes. It includes hay, silage, root crops, and concentrated feeds such as grains, cake, and meal. This compensates for the lack of fresh grass and provides the body with the necessary energy and nutrients. Calves in the first months of life are fed with maternal milk. It contains all the components necessary for growth and development. Gradually, concentrated feeds, hay, and silage are introduced into the calves' diet to accustom them to adult nutrition. Special attention is paid to the nutrition of pregnant cows. Their diet must be enriched with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to ensure the normal development of the fetus. To achieve this, the amount of concentrated and succulent feeds is increased. Proper nutrition is the key to the health and high productivity of Volyn cows. A balanced diet allows them to fully realize their genetic potential and produce the maximum amount of quality meat.
