Gascon cow
History of the breed: The Gascon cow is the result of centuries of selection carried out in the harsh conditions of the French Pyrenees. Cows of this breed originally adapted to life in mountainous areas, where the climate is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations, and pastures do not always abound with lush grass. The origin of the Gascon breed is closely linked to the historical region of Gascony in the southwest of France. Initially bred in the Saint-Gaudens area, this breed gradually spread throughout France and then beyond its borders. An important milestone in the development of the breed was the establishment of the first breeding book in 1894, which allowed for the systematization of breeding work and the preservation of the unique qualities of Gascon cows. Gascon cows are characterized by high adaptability. They easily endure both winter cold and summer heat. Due to their hardiness, the cows can effectively utilize even sparse pastures. Additionally, Gascon cows have strong health and are resistant to many diseases. Breeders paid great attention to developing the meat qualities of the breed. As a result of many years of work, animals with well-developed musculature and high marbling of meat were obtained. At the same time, valuable qualities such as strong legs, durable hooves, and efficient feed utilization were preserved. The meat of Gascon cows has high taste qualities and is valued by gourmets around the world. In 1997, Gascon beef received a special quality mark confirming its exceptional origin and high taste characteristics. Exterior: Gascon cows are medium-sized. They have short, dense gray fur, which protects them from both heat and cold. Interestingly, calves are born with red fur but turn gray around 4 months of age, like adult cows. Bulls are also gray, but the lower part of their bodies is darker, almost black. Both cows and bulls are horned. The hooves of Gascon cows are black and very strong. Thanks to such hooves, they can cover long distances. Bulls average 145 cm in height at the withers and weigh 800-1200 kg. Cows are slightly smaller: 135 cm in height at the withers and weigh 550-750 kg. Conditions of keeping: Gascon cows are well adapted to harsh mountain conditions and can withstand temperatures from -15 to +40 °C. They are not picky about changes in diet.

Diet: Gascon cows originate from the mountainous regions of the Pyrenees. They are accustomed to harsh conditions and can feed on various types of fodder. In the past, during winter, Gascon cows only ate hay, which was not very nutritious. In summer, they grazed in the mountains, where the grass was better, but they had to walk a lot to find enough feed. Therefore, Gascon cows have learned to absorb nutrients very well from any food. Currently, Gascon cows are raised in different ways. If they are specially fattened to gain weight more quickly, grains and compound feed are added to their diet. However, even with regular feeding, Gascon cows grow well due to their high feed conversion efficiency.
