Breed history: The Chianina cow, or Chianina, is one of the oldest breeds of cattle originating from Italy. Its origin is linked to the Val di Chiana valley, as well as the middle Tiber valley. The breed's name reflects its connection to this region. The history of animal breeding spans over 2200 years, and they were raised in such areas of Italy as Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. As early as 55 AD, the Roman writer Columella described local bulls as "large and white," which confirms the historical significance of the breed. Until the mid-20th century, the primary purpose of these animals was related to agriculture. They were used as labor on the fields, performing heavy work. Even after the onset of agricultural mechanization, they continued to be used until the 1970s. Today, bulls of this breed can be seen in cultural processions, such as historical parades at the Palio di Siena, where they serve as symbols of the region's traditions. In the 1930s, breeders began selecting individuals with characteristics more suitable for meat production. Animals with shorter legs, long bodies, and more pronounced musculature became preferred. In addition, emphasis was placed on growth rate, high meat yield, and reproductive qualities in cows, such as maternal instincts. In 1933, a breed registry was established for the breed, and in 1935, a standard was officially approved, regulating all the main parameters of the Chianina. After World War II, the Chianina cow gained international recognition and began to be actively exported to various countries. Thanks to frozen sperm, breeding animals, and embryos, it spread worldwide, including to America, Russia, China, and Asian countries. Today, Chianina is valued for its high-quality meat, which has become the main focus of its breeding. Exterior: The Chianina cow is the tallest and heaviest breed of cattle. Adult bulls can reach a height of up to 1.8 m, and their weight often exceeds 1600 kg. Oxen can sometimes reach a height of up to 2 m. Cows weigh between 800 and 1000 kg, and their height at the withers is 150–159 cm. For bulls, this figure is higher – their height ranges from 168 to 172 cm, and their weight can reach up to 1800 kg. Young bulls that reach a height of 1.51 m by 12 months are considered high-quality representatives of the breed. The coat of these animals is short, most often white or light gray. In bulls, the front part of the body sometimes has a darker gray shade.
