Mandalong Speckles
Breed history: Mandalong Specials as a breed originated in Australia, where in the mid-1960s it was decided to breed a new breed that could combine several important qualities: endurance, the ability to gain weight rapidly, and ease of calving. The breeding of the breed took place in Mandalong Park, located near Sydney in New South Wales. It was here that the decision was made to cross breeds that could ensure high meat productivity and an even distribution of fat layers throughout the carcass at various stages of growth. Such distribution improves the taste qualities of the meat, making it tender and juicy, and also contributes to the formation of even marbling, which is in demand in the high-quality beef market. To achieve these goals, breeders used a complex breeding scheme based on five foundational breeds. The breed was formed from Charolais, Chianina, Shorthorn (polled type), British White, and Brahman. These breeds were chosen for specific reasons, each contributing its unique qualities: Charolais added high potential for weight gain, Chianina was distinguished by its height and muscularity, Shorthorn was known for its good fertility and hardiness, British White was characterized by its robust build, and Brahman was famous for its adaptability to hot climates and high disease resistance. After four generations of crossing, when a stable set of characteristics was achieved, the breed formed a genetic ratio of 58.33% European blood, 25% British, and 16.67% Brahman. In 1990, Mandalong Specials were officially registered with the Australian Meat Cattle Association, which allowed the breed to gain status and recognition among other high-performing meat breeds. From that moment, active work began on improving the breed and promoting it in the market. The first shipments of this breed outside Australia began significantly later. Exterior: The Mandalong Specials breed of cows is characterized by a large and massive build, allowing them to successfully gain weight and develop musculature. These cows can be either polled or horned, which adds variety to the breed's exterior, although about 40% of the animals are hornless, which is considered an advantage in commercial breeding as it facilitates care and reduces the risk of injuries among individuals. The head of the breed representatives is elongated, with a straight profile and a slightly convex occipital crest, giving Mandalong Specials a distinctive expressive appearance.

Diet: In the hot summer period, the basis of nutrition consists of pasture grasses rich in proteins and vitamins. In winter, feeding includes hay, silage, and root crops such as beets and carrots to provide animals with all the necessary nutrients. Since one of the ancestors of Mandalong specials is zebu, cows of this breed are able to digest coarse feed more easily, which is an additional advantage for the livestock farmer, as the choice of what to feed the cow expands. For pregnant and lactating cows, the diet is additionally enriched with concentrates and vitamin-mineral supplements that help maintain their health and productivity at a high level.
