Breed history: Bazadaise is a breed of cattle known for its exceptional meat productivity and hardiness. This ancient breed, originating from France, is gaining increasing popularity worldwide due to its unique qualities. It is believed that Bazadaise is the result of the merging of the bloodlines of local Aquitaine cattle from southwestern France and bulls that came from the Iberian Peninsula. In the late 19th century, during a period of rapid agricultural development, the Bazadaise breed received special attention. In 1896, a herd book was opened, marking the beginning of targeted efforts to improve these magnificent creatures. By 1940, the Bazadaise population reached an impressive 60,000 heads. These resilient and strong animals were used not only for meat and milk production but also as draft animals. However, the post-war era, with its rapid mechanization of agriculture, became a severe test for the breed. Fields that once grazed herds were converted to grain crops, and the number of Bazadaise began to decline rapidly. By 1970, only 700 representatives of this ancient breed remained in all of France. Fortunately, enthusiasts and scientists did not allow this unique genetic heritage to disappear. A program was developed and successfully implemented to restore the Bazadaise population. In 1989, the first representatives of the breed were sent beyond France – to England, Australia, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands, where they began a new chapter in their history. By 2013, the Bazadaise population had grown to 3,400 individuals raised on more than 140 farms. Even today, in the town of Bazas, an annual vibrant and colorful festival, Fête des Boeufs Gras, is held in honor of this breed and its exquisite marbled meat. Exterior: The Bazadaise cow is distinguished by its powerful build. The coat is a solid gray color, which can vary from a rich dark shade to a delicate light gray. This natural palette not only attracts the eye but also makes the breed easily recognizable. Calves are born with charming pale beige fur, which lasts for about three months. Under this fur lies black skin, while the light muzzle and mucous membranes create a striking contrast. Their horns, present in both males and females, draw special attention. At the base, they have a soft waxy yellow color, which turns to a strict black shade towards the tips.
